Home Improvements – The Bedroom

The bedroom is often neglected when it comes to making home improvements. The majority of people tend to prioritize rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom, or the areas of the home that are seen by visitors, such as the lounge and dining room. Nevertheless, making improvements to a bedroom can have a huge impact on the quality of a person’s sleep, which in turn leads to an overall improvement in their health and well being. A well maintained and welcoming bedroom can also provide an extra space for relaxing   somewhere to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Somewhere to read a book perhaps? The bedroom should be a tranquil environment   a place that offers peace, and sanctuary from noise and chaos!

Before any improvements to the bedroom are undertaken there are a number of things that should be considered carefully.

The Bed
It goes without saying that this is probably the most important item of furniture in the room. It is definitely worth investing in a decent bed (or mattress if buying a new bed is too costly). There is little point in having a beautifully decorated bedroom, with lovely furniture and fittings, if you struggle to get a good night’s sleep because of an uncomfortable, old mattress! There are many companies that specialize in the sale of affordable, but good quality beds and mattresses.

The Furniture
Bedroom furniture is usually either fitted units or free standing items. Both have pros and cons. Fitted units are great for making the best use of all of the available space. Awkward nooks and crannies can be incorporated into the design. It also makes full use of the floor to ceiling height. The main drawback with fitted furniture is the fact that it can’t be re arranged or taken with the homeowner if they move house! For people who like to change things about a bit this can be a bit of a problem!

The Lighting
Lighting can be cleverly used in the bedroom to create a warm and relaxing ambience. Spotlights can be used to great effect. Bedside lamps also work very well. It is perhaps a good idea to avoid harsh, bright lighting in this room.

The Decor
Bolder choices of color often work particularly well in the bedroom. For example, feature walls in deep reds or purples can produce a dramatic and sumptuous effect. Alternatively, some homeowners prefer to stick to more neutral tones. Whites and pastels can create a lovely fresh feel.

The Flooring
Carpet is a good choice of flooring in a bedroom. It is lovely and soft underfoot. For those who prefer a wooden floor, they should consider the noise levels in rooms below.
